Looking to learn to dive in 2027? We organise beginner scuba diving courses every day. You can choose from our three-hour try dive lessons, or, if you would like a qualification, sign up for our two or three day PADI scuba diver courses. Malta is the perfect place to learn to dive: warm water, no currents, great visibility and many sheltered, calm bays, which means all your training is conducted directly in the sea rather than in a swimming pool.

At Maltaqua we like to keep our learn to dive classes small, to make sure you get the best possible tuition. Our Small Group Guarantee covers all our learn to dive courses: a ratio of just two students to one instructor on every try dive lesson for first-time divers, and one instructor to three students on our PADI certification courses. So even if you book as a family or group of four or five, we will still provide you with two instructors.

Which course should I choose?

If you are unsure, we suggest starting with a try dive lesson, a fun afternoon and a great introduction to the sport. These run every afternoon except Sundays. If you enjoy it (and we are sure you will), you can go straight on to a PADI certification course and gain an internationally recognised qualification. Depending on how much time you have, you can enrol on our two-day PADI Scuba Diver course or our three-day PADI Open Water course. All equipment is provided, along with road transport to the dive sites.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

Not at all. You need to be able to swim, but you do not need to be a strong swimmer.

What age can I start diving?

There is no upper age limit. Diving is for everyone aged 10 and over: as long as you are medically fit, you can learn to dive.

How long are the lessons?

Our try dive lessons take around three hours. For our PADI certification courses you will be with us from 08:00 to 14:30 for the duration: two days for the PADI Scuba Diver (12 metre level) and three days for the PADI Open Water (18 metre certification level).

Do you provide all the equipment?

Yes, we provide all the equipment you need. All you need to bring is a swimsuit, a towel and a change of dry clothes.

I wear prescription glasses. Can I see underwater?

Yes. We have a selection of prescription scuba masks you can borrow during your course, and a range of masks with prescription lenses in our dive shop, so you may even decide to buy your own.

Do I need a medical certificate to dive?

Most people do not need a medical before diving; it depends on your medical history. We will send you a medical questionnaire to complete, which will indicate whether you need to consult your doctor before starting your training.

Can you help with accommodation during our training?

Yes. We have a choice of apartments next to Maltaqua, making it easy to stay with us during your training. You are welcome to book any number of nights (three-night minimum stay). Our apartments at Sands range from comfortable one-bedroom studios for one or two people to a large seafront villa sleeping six.
